This session allows participants to plan, create, modify classroom centers that work. Creating time for small group intervention and open-ended workshops equals time and flexibility. Creating centers that range from all teacher-planned to all student-selected can give the instructor structured time or more flexibility to provide intervention to individual students or small groups. Educators with this talent impact student growth, lower personal stress, and feel more confident with achieving their goals.
Every classroom needs structure and routines. This professional development session is designed to strengthen educators understanding of how crucial culture and management are to creating a successful learning environment. The following topics are covered: what’s working/not working in the classroom, how to be an effective classroom manager, essential components of a classroom management plan, room arrangement, buy-in, and rules/expectations for consistency.
Data-driven instruction is one of the most discussed topics in education. It is also one of the most misunderstood topics. When conducted properly, using data to inform teaching practices is one of the most effective ways to help students achieve success. Collaboration among teachers in each step of the process can exceed expectations of data usage. This session notes the importance of sharing best practices, adopting collective expectations for student performance, and developing effective strategies to better serve students.
As a teacher, there are so many assignments to grade, and it can sometimes feel overwhelming. It is easy to sit down with a red pen and find mistakes; even correct the mistakes for the students! The best way to help students develop as learners is to use effective questioning techniques to probe their thinking. During this session, participants will learn the most effective ways to provide feedback to students so they can develop as learners and meet long-term learning goals.
Setting targets, writing rubrics, and assessing across the curriculum sounds great but who has the time? Will parents participate? Is this just a big art project? Let’s see and discuss success stories and how your students can join those ranks. In small groups, teachers will view, discuss, and create a project to mirror the interactions in the classroom. Participants will be engaged in conversation with peers about what they created, including modifications and adaptations for future PBL opportunities.
Maybe instructional practices are feeling a bit dry or routine, or students don’t have enough of a voice in the classroom. Visible Thinking Routines are a simple and easy way to invigorate the classroom while giving students an opportunity to practice key critical thinking skills. Participants will learn different routines to implement immediately in the classroom. Some techniques are quiet, some loud; some require movement, some do not. Teachers can select ones that work for their classrooms and students.
